Frontline clinicians are the most powerful force in PrAKI prevention. The Kidney Kind Champion Programme trains and recognises midwives, nurses and (coming soon) doctors who are leading that change in their hospitals, their communities and their countries.
Champions are professionals who have demonstrated consistent exemplary practice in the prevention, identification and management of PrAKI, or who have shown outstanding dedication to education in this field. They are clinical leaders, educators and advocates who are building a global network of expertise that will outlast any single project or programme.
The programme launched in Nairobi, where Dr Eunice Atsali, Director of the Midwives Association of Kenya, awarded our first 11 founding members. We now have 13 champions across five countries — and we are growing.
Want to get involved or nominate someone? We are actively expanding the Kidney Kind Champion Network. If you are a midwife, nurse or clinical leader working in PrAKI prevention or education, we would love to hear from you. Get in touch at PrAKI.Consortium@kcl.ac.uk
Building the Network
Our model is simple. Train senior clinical leaders. Send them back to their institutions. Let them change practice from within.
Kenya and Zambia are leading the way — with active Champion networks, Ministry of Health support, and midwives who are now training their own colleagues and driving local research.
Sierra Leone is close behind — building on a strong national partnership with the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer's office.
The UK launches July 2026 — bringing the programme home, starting with midwifery leads across London's hospital trusts.
Could your country be next?
We are looking for national midwifery associations, nursing councils and Ministries of Health who want to put kidney health at the heart of maternity care. Our model works in any setting.
